India is 1/3 the size of the United States and 3 times the population of the United States. According to my Lonely Planet, eighteen languages are recognized by the constitution, but over 1600 minor languages and dialects were listed on the latest census.

We are visiting the northwest region of India. We are flying into Delhi (a red dot in the midst of purple on the map above), traveling through the states of Rajasthan (shaded cream), Haryana(purple splotch above Delhi) and Punjab (dark blue above Rajasthan and Harayana). We will also visit some of the Himalayan hill stations, including Shimla, found above in the area shaded blue gray to the northeast of Punjab.
